More Load Opportunities
A CDL lets you haul heavier and larger loads, opening the door to more freight options and higher earnings.

Higher Earning Potential
CDL-qualified hotshot drivers can command better-paying loads compared to non-CDL drivers.

Cheaper Insurance Rates
Insurance companies often view CDL drivers as lower risk, which can mean reduced premiums.

Increased Professional Credibility
Shippers and brokers trust CDL drivers more, which can mean more consistent repeat business.

Tow Heavier Trailers/Better Rates
With a CDL, you can legally operate truck-and-trailer combinations above 26,000 lbs.

Job Security/Backup Options
Even if hotshot slows down, you can always drive semi-trucks or other commercial vehicles.

Less Risk of Fines & Penalties
Running hotshot loads without a CDL can lead to costly DOT fines—your CDL keeps you compliant.

Access to More Load Boards
Many premium load boards require a CDL, giving you more consistent work and networking options.

Our Hotshot CDL Fast Track Program capitalizes on the behind-the-wheel hours and experience you already have or are already gaining by driving your current non-CDL hotshot combination vehicle.
We provide your online theory class, so you can take the CDL permit exam.
After you've earned you CDL permit, we will verify with your carrier or your ELD device to confirm you've had at least 150 hours or behind-the-wheel experience.
We will then update the DOT that you are now ready to go down and perform your pre-trip inspection and road test to finally earn your CDL (Commercial Drivers License).
No. With our Hotshot CDL Fast Track Program, we will verify that you've undergone at least 150 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, which will replace the need for you to attend an in-person trucking school, saving you thousands of dollars and weeks in a classroom.
Since, we're an approved provider registered with the DOT TPR (Training Provided Registry), we will notify and update DOT FMCSA that you are now cleared to take your final pre-trip inspection and road test to obtain your CDL.
We can verify that you've completed at least 150 hours of behind-the-wheel drive time by contacting your carrier for verification.
If you're your own non-CDL authority, we can verify it with your ELD system and/or by the length of time your authority has been active.
When working toward your CDL, the Theory part refers to the classroom (or online) portion of training that covers the knowledge you need before you get behind the wheel.
Under the FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements (effective Feb 2022), all new CDL applicants must complete CDL Theory Training from a registered provider.
CDL Theory Includes:
✓ Basic Operation – vehicle controls, shifting, backing, coupling/uncoupling.
✓ Safe Operating Procedures – managing space, night driving, extreme weather.
✓ Advanced Operating Practices – hazard perception, emergency maneuvers, skid control.
✓ Vehicle Systems & Reporting – inspections, maintenance, and identifying defects.
✓ Non-Driving Activities – handling cargo, hours of service, trip planning, whistleblower protections.
Key Point: Usually done before behind-the-wheel training.
✓ Can be completed online or in person. Requires a minimum score of 80% to pass.
Once finished, your results are uploaded into the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, which is required before you can take the CDL skills test.
✵ Think of Theory as, CDL classroom knowledge, while Behind-the-Wheel = practical driving skills.
The 150-hour rule is part of the regulations for qualifying experienced non-CDL drivers to get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in the U.S., specifically when upgrading to a higher class of CDL or certain endorsements. Here’s a clear breakdown:
Who it applies to:
Drivers who have been operating non-CDL commercial vehicles (like vehicles under 26,001 lbs) and are seeking a CDL for larger vehicles (Class A or Class B).
These drivers are considered “experienced” if they have at least 150 hours of documented driving experience in the type of vehicle relevant to the CDL class they’re applying for.
What counts as the 150 hours:
Driving a commercial vehicle (even if non-CDL) in on-road conditions.
Can include behind-the-wheel training, job experience, or other verifiable driving time logged under supervision.
Purpose:
The rule allows experienced drivers to waive or shorten certain CDL training requirements, since they already have real-world experience operating commercial vehicles safely.
It’s often used to satisfy entry requirements for CDL skills testing, meaning they may not need the full formal CDL training hours that brand-new drivers must complete.
Documentation:
Drivers usually need records from employers or training schools confirming their 150+ hours of driving experience.
DOT or state DMV may verify these records before allowing the driver to take CDL tests.
Essentially, if a driver can prove 150 hours of relevant commercial driving experience, they can qualify as an “experienced driver” for certain CDL classes or endorsements, which can speed up the licensing process.
✵ As a registered approved FMCSA training provider, we can fast track your hotshot Class A CDL, saving you precious time and thousands of dollars, while allowing you to enjoy all it's benefits.
